The Farm as a Whole:

  • Why organic agriculture?  The difference between organic and non-organic agriculture and the benefits of organic agriculture.
  • Relationships and interdependencies of economical, ecological, and social aspects in an agricultural environment
  • The farm as an organism, life cycles and balance.
  • Environmental issues including saving energy, water and gas, solar energy, waste disposal, and recycling

Soil Science

  • Basic soil types in Namibia, characteristics and nutrient availability, relationship to plant growth, animal performance and efficiency of rainfall.
  • The four ecosystem processes (water and mineral cycle, energy flow, community dynamics)
  • Soil erosion and bush encroachment

Practical cooking & baking:

  • Menu planning, stock control, book keeping, household budgeting
  • Cooking equipment, cooking terms, workplace organization, understanding recipes
  • Food preservation
  • Hospitality: guestrooms, laying tables, serving, communication and customer care, decoration
  • Basic knowledge of Namibian tourism sights, understanding the importance of tourism in Namibia
  • Providing and organising catering services

 

Household Food Production

  • Vegetable gardening, layout and maintenance, planning and crop rotation, irrigation, pest control, preparing compost, planting of herbs, fruit, vegetables and flowers
  • Poultry - feeding, breeding, slaughtering, preparing, eggs
  • General homestaed organization
  • Recycling

 

Needlework

  • Sewing, mending, knitting, stitching, crocheting, fabric painting

 

Economics

  • Basic PC-literacy (Word, Excel, Internet)
  • Basic record and book keeping
  • Basic principles of financial planning
